Different Types of Curtains Transparency (Curtain Opacity Guide)

In this article, we will talk about three primary levels of transparency and darkness that curtains can typically fall into:

  1. Sheer curtain (Around 40%)
  2. Dimout curtain (70% to 95%)
  3. Blackout curtain (95% to 100%)

Sheer Curtains

The sheer curtains have a delicate texture and are lightweight and transparent, allowing natural light to filter through while still providing some privacy. We typically style our sheer curtains with s-curves to enhance their privacy and aesthetic appeal. The sheer curtains also create a pleasant atmosphere in the room with their beautiful appearance and add an instant infusion of style into your interior design while allowing for proper ventilation.
Sheer curtains are also generally used as an initial layer for window treatment before the second layer of curtains

Personal Expereince:

To add two layers of curtains, you need a minimum of 22 cm of space on top of your window to install a double-track system for s-curve style, one for your sheer curtains and one for your dimout or blackout drapes. A minimum of 20 cm is sufficient if it is triple-pinch pleat-style curtains or other curtain styles.

For example, on some of our visits to clients' homes, they like to add two-layered curtains to their windows, but the built-in curtain box on top of the window has a width of less than 20 cm, so due to these kinds of factors, it is almost impossible to install two-layered curtains. Therefore, we have to develop different ideas depending on the situation.

Dimout or Room Darkening Curtains

Dimout curtains block 70-90% of the light entering the house, depending on the fabric's color and weaving style. Nonetheless, most of these curtains and their fabrics are sold in simple or solid colors, offering limited options for patterned colors. Most dimout curtains are made of synthetic fibers such as polyester or silk.

Regarding privacy level, dimout curtains provide more privacy than sheer curtains; at night, it is only possible to see some shadows behind them if someone stands just in front of the curtain with a light behind them.
Dimout curtains also go through a heat treatment or heat set during manufacturing to enhance their durability and lifespan. This process ensures that they maintain their shape and size after washing, giving them high resistance to sunlight and heat.

Personal Experience:

In high-traffic areas at home that require consistent lighting for safe navigation, such as staircases or hallways, it's advisable to opt for dimout curtains rather than blackout curtains. These allow some light to filter through day and night, which is especially useful in brightly lit neighborhoods, aiding navigation even when the lights are off.

Blackout Curtains

Blackout curtains can help prevent 90 to 100% of the outside sunlight from entering the room. In addition, they provide the highest level of privacy, reduce outside noise, and help reduce the room's temperature by blocking outside heat. Hence, it saves energy, resulting in better air conditioning performance.
Blackout curtains exist in various fabrics, including polyester, cotton, linen, velvet, and silk. However, selecting suitable materials is essential, depending on the intended purpose and functionality of the desired window treatment.

Personal Expereince:

Blackout curtains can block out 100% of the light coming from outside; however, if there is no curtain cover box on top of the windows, where the curtains hang from the rails or tracks, light may seep in from this gap. If the curtains don't reach the floor due to short windows, we recommend designing and cutting curtains a little bit longer to avoid a lot of light coming in from the gaps under the curtains.

All of these recommendations vary from window to window, so it is better to consider these little tips and consideration before crafting your curtains.

Note: Achieving 100% lightproofing for windows is challenging without installing a cover box and extending the curtains to specific points to prevent light leaks. However, these light leaks become minimal and are hardly noticeable at night.
