Thailand's Eastern Economic Corridor Office (EECO) has unveiled a groundbreaking $15 billion initiative to transform Chonburi into a leading global smart city by 2037. The "Smart City and Commercial/Residential Hub" project is a monumental undertaking, sprawling over 927.2 hectares, and is part of the EEC's strategy for fostering new industries.
With a projected investment influx of 535 billion baht in the next five years, this project focuses on key sectors such as medical innovation, digital industries, aviation, logistics, and various forms of tourism, including health and high-income group tourism. The overarching goal is to elevate Chonburi into one of the top 10 smart cities worldwide.
The project's 10-year roadmap is divided into three distinct phases:
Financing for this visionary project will blend public-private partnerships contributing 51.98 billion baht (9.7%) and substantial private investments amounting to 468.07 billion baht (87.5%).
This ambitious development is not just about infrastructure; it's about fostering a vibrant community. By 2032, the project aims to house 100,000 people, create over 50,000 jobs, and nurture between 150 to 300 startups. The plan includes efficient transport systems, comprehensive public utilities, and amenities to improve the quality of life for residents.
Crucially, this initiative is designed to complement, not compete with, Thailand's existing urban landscapes, positioning Chonburi as a synergistic hub in the global smart city network.
